At Dior, perfume is worn like jewelry, so plunge with me into a world where every note tells a story.

I’m going to introduce you to the art of Monsieur Christian Dior, and above all to his exceptional influence on the beauty industry.

The inspiring story of one of the greatest names in luxury.

Monsieur Dior was born in 1905 in Granville, and moved to Paris in the 1910s.

He was attracted to art and dreamed of becoming an architect. Unfortunately, his parents wanted him to follow a more conventional career path. So he entered the École des Sciences Politiques in Paris (Sciences Po) in 1923, but left in 1926 without graduating.

At the same time, Monsieur Dior took a keen interest in art. He frequented many artists and even opened a small art gallery in 1928, where he exhibited painters such as Picasso, Braque and Dufy.

In 1938, Christian Dior was first hired by Robert Piguet. When war broke out, he was forced to leave Paris. After the war years, he became assistant designer at Balmain.

Later, thanks to his connections, Christian Dior opened his own fashion house. He is best known for his iconic “New Look”.

Today, we can find all his iconic creations in his childhood home in Granville, which has become a museum in his honor.

I’ve already been to this magnificent residence. You’ll feel an immediate change of scenery and be impressed by the talent of this creator. It’s a rich, pleasant and wonderful place. You’ll discover accessories, perfume bottles and, of course, the sublime dresses designed by Monsieur Christian Dior.

The museum is open from April 12 to November 2, 2025. You can also go there to create! Yes, they also offer creative workshops.

In particular, there’s a “Petit styliste” workshop dedicated to children, where they can learn the codes of the House of Dior. They can give free rein to their imagination by personalizing a dress with feathers, rhinestones and paint. They can even take their creations home with them.

For older children aged 11 to 16, there’s also a “Hatmaker’s Seed” workshop. This workshop lets them make their own hat, be it a tambourine or a straw hat. They’ll have the chance to personalize it with their own creativity.

Finally, a “milliner’s headdress” workshop is available for people over 16, for a convivial moment filled with memories. This is your chance to show off your modelling skills and let yourself be carried away by the magic of the beautiful world of luxury. In this workshop, you’ll be able to create an artistic headdress. The next dates for these workshops will be available from June 2025. So don’t delay!

For a little Paris getaway, you can also catch a glimpse of Monsieur Christian Dior’s creations at the Louvre until July 21, 2025.

The exhibition is called “Louvre Couture” and features a collection of 65 silhouettes. It allows us to discover styles from the 1960s to the present day. This presentation encompasses the greatest names in haute couture, including Christian Dior.

Perfume, a love story at Dior

Since the creation of its first fragrance, the House of Dior has never ceased to evolve in this meticulous, delicate universe. Christian Dior has always sought to sublimate women, not only through luxury ready-to-wear, but also in cosmetics and perfumery. So that she can reveal all her beauty. Miss Dior, the house’s first fragrance, was created in 1947.

The house of Christian Dior was one of the pioneers in expanding its creations beyond ready-to-wear. It has now been excelling in this sector for 78 years. Dior is well known in the perfume industry. With J’adore Dior, released in 1999, the house is one of the world’s best-selling fragrances.

In 2023, an exhibition was held in the 6th arrondissement of Paris to promote the success of this fragrance. Dior had to extend the duration of the exhibition because it was so successful.

I had the opportunity to visit this exhibition. I was plunged straight into the world of J’adore Dior. I learned all about its history, saw iconic sketches and discovered fabulous olfactory notes. I also noticed the luxurious, golden atmosphere embodied by J’adore Dior.

At the end of 2024, a new era was created around this olfactory atmosphere. A new muse appeared to revitalize sales with a new target: Generation Z. After 20 years as the muse of J’adore fragrance, Charlize Theron hands over to singer Rihanna. A strategic choice that allows Dior to diversify its muses and give the fragrance greater visibility. Rihanna is one of the biggest icons of this decade. She owns her own cosmetics brand, Fenty Beauty, with 50 different shades, and sang at Super Bowl 2023, giving her immense visibility. What’s more, she had already done a collaboration with Dior for another perfume at the Château de Versailles.

Dior has also shown that it can combine innovation and prestige with their new Miss Dior fragrance. Indeed, this fragrance has a new “nomad” collection. I recommend this fragrance, which is practical to use thanks to its Roller Pearl applicator. You can take it everywhere with you, it fits perfectly even in a small handbag. Finally, it’ll leave you smelling floral all day long.

If you’d like to find out even more about Dior fragrances, don’t hesitate to visit the Galerie Dior. There’s a whole section devoted to fragrances. In a month’s time, you’ll be able to find our full article on this gallery.

See you soon on the Les Demoiselles à Versailles blog.  We’ll end with a quote from Monsieur Christian Dior: “A woman’s perfume says more about her than her handwriting.”
